On Wednesday morning, the Dandenong “Solo” Rangers welcomed new import Luke Fitzgerald to Australia.

Luke (23yo) arrived fresh from playing with the Kentucky Bluegrass Stallions in the American Basketball League (ABA) for his first SEABL season with the Rangers.

The 6-7 Forward/Centre attended the University of the Cumberlands and averaged 17.2 points and 8 rebounds per game in his senior year. He was also first team All American in his senior year.

Even though he hadn’t heard much about Australia, Luke was excited to finally arrive, “I’ll admit I don’t know much about this place but I am looking forward to a great experience here.”

“I’ll need to learn to understand the Aussie accent, that’s going to be something I’ll struggle with but the people I’ve met so far are really welcoming and very helpful.”

“I’ve already met a couple of the guys from the team. I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of them and actually getting on the court.”

He’ll be put to the test immediately with the “Solo” Rangers playing a number of practice matches in the coming week.

“I’m not sure of any offensive sets yet but I’ll just make sure I bring energy and an inside presence for these practice games.”

As for the season proper, “I’ll be happy to provide whatever Coach wants from me. If he wants points, I’ll score, if he wants me to rebound, then that’s what I’ll focus on. I’m keen to do whatever I’m asked to do.”

Luke is coming off a strong 4 year college career as the team’s offensive focus in the low block. He has a nice mix of offensive moves and can get it done on both his left and right hands, while being an excellent free throw shooter! Luke will be the inside focus that the Rangers have been seeking to free up Brent Hobba to his preferred ‘4 spot’.

The South East Australian Basketball League season commences Saturday 13th March, 2010. The Dandenong Solo Rangers first hit-out is against the Brisbane Spartans at our Dandenong Basketball Association home court. Please note the new special tip-off time of 7.00pm.
