The much anticipated Gold medal Match featured the tallest players for the Championships, Rangers frontline of Stepanie Pal & Amanda Meinking vs. Eagles’ Sherf. In the first quarter both looked to control the paint and by the end of the first break nobody had asserted their dominance, with the scores locked up at 14 points.
In the 2nd quarter the Eagles got the early start to build a early 6 point lead. Rangers evened the match by the end of the quarter with their inside focus. By the half the Eagles had a narrow 27-26 lead.
The start of the 3rd quarter and the arm wrestle continued. The lead exchanged numerous times. However by the end of the 3rd term the Eagles were in the lead 47 to 44. They had played the quarter strongly and were in a position to finish the Rangers off in the last quarter.
Howver, under the guidance of Coach Lisa Waters, the Rangers weren’t going to lie down. They came to play in the last quarter, extending their defence up the court with a full court trapping D. Turnovers hurt the Eagles at this point and the Rangers turned around their 3 point deficit to a 7 point lead in a matter of minutes. With less than two minutes to go the Eagles tried desperately to get their lead back, but the time ran out leaving the Rangers to deservedly claim their Gold Medal
Final Score: Dandenong Rangers 62 defeated Diamond Valley Eagles 53
Congratulations to Head Coach Lisa Waters, her staff and the wonderful girls that made up the squad! The trip over, whilst an enormous journey to even get there, was well, well worth the blood, sweat and tears!
The Dandenong Basketball Association extends a HIP HIP HOORAY to the entire team... We are very, very proud of your achievements.
